WHO IS OYA?

Lets start by saying Oya means "She who tore"

Oya is one of the most common known youruban Orichas. Oya is the goddess of Storms and Winds, and Her realm ranges from tornadoes to hurricanes.  Her name means "She Who Tore" in Yoruba.  She is the master of manifestation. She can manifest as winds ranging from the gentlest breeze to the raging hurricane or cyclone. Oya is also know to be a fierce Warrior Oricha. Especially when she is around her Shango. She will protect him with all her strength as he is her one and only true love.

TORNADO.gif

Oya is sometimes referred to as one of the Dark goddesses because while clearing your path just like a tornado she will suck you in to the darkness and you may experience negative energy, destruction, hatred and even the thought of giving up. She will spin you around her winds of changes of tornado and then release you with a new beginning. That is why she is feared mainly. Many individuals have petition Oya and accidently forget to be as detail as possible. Many have lost treasures from their lives accidentally and become upset of this action. Thus fearing her.

Oya is the guardian between the realms of life and death. She gives assistance and guidance to those when they make their final transition into the spiritual world. Oya is the gate keeper to the spiritual world. Many mistaken her to be the guardian of the cemetery. This is a myth. The reason of this confusion is turned to the fact that she is known to be around the gates of the cemeteries. Please read "Dia de los muertos" to understand Oyas presence around cemeteries. It is a fact that Oya by closing or opening the gates of the spiritual world may either hold back the ancestor spirit or call it forth.

OYA IS  and is NOT.

Oya  does not use charms or magick and is not a witch. Many distinct this by the witch broom. OYA was created born before the Irunmoles on the left step foot on Oro. (EARTH). The broom is a offering to Oya. Once a person is granted their petition of a new path and their old one cleared completely. The individual who requested the petition, offers in gratitude a small straw broom as a offering and thanks.

Oya is not a Water Oricha
Oya is not the elder sister to Yemaya and Oshun, in fact she is the daughter of Oro.

Oya's Birth

Oya, the fierce Orisha that we know her to be, was actually born as an element: wind. Her birth was a direct result of Oddua walking the earth observing the new planet (Oro- Mother Earth). As Oddua walked, Oya appeared showing her full on strength as wind. She whisked around as she was pleased with her force and displaying her ability to create winds of up to 360 miles per hour. Odduah was amazed with this new Orisha-  Oya and began to walk faster and the faster he walked, the more powerful she became. As her strength increased, he noticed that Oya was able to duplicate herself. He began to slow his pace and noticed that her strength then decreased to a gentle breeze.  Oya moved around freely...so freely that she knocked Oddua off of his path of observation, indirectly creating the equator, longitude and latitude lines on Oro.

Oddua, observing Oya's presence and afraid that she may get out of control with her strong winds, asked her mother, Oro to please help contain Oya's wind. Oro obliged by speaking to her 2 children (atmosphere and ozone layer) to keep her within their boundaries so that she did not cause destruction in the heavens. The 2 children agreed and as a result, there is no wind in space.

Oya takes after her mother, Oro which is why she is able to create full on destruction. Unlike her mother, she does not hold on to grudges or anger much because she has such short term memory though if reminded, she will continue on with her destruction like no other!

Characteristics of the Omo Oya.

They are reserved people, of calm character like a breeze but when they get angry they are a tempest. They are like the wind, they do not like to be locked in one place, they tire easily with the everyday and monotonous behavior. They are extremely faithful in most cases, but in others are given to extra conjugal adventures if not with the correct spiritual partner. In all cases they are very jealous. These characteristics are one of many. These characteristics do not mean you are a certain Oricha. Remember Orichas choose you for certain unique qualities not because you share same characteristics. Orichas are official in the Kariocha. Ashe...
